A wind of change

Here, design is given pride of place. Portraits of artists, contemporary furnishings, decorative objects and trendy boutiques all provide keys to the life-style of today.

TAKING UP THE CHALLENGE TAKING UP THE CHALLENGE
Graphic designer Elisabeth Mione (formerly an art director in an advertising agency) has (finally !) decided to do what she enjoys most : interior decoration. After already designing several pieces of furniture, she is now devoting herself to her passion with admirable dynamism and real inspiration. She was responsible for revamping the hotel restaurant Anis in Nice, playing with digital-print fabric for the dining-room and also the bed-heads in the guest-rooms. Here she has opted for fashionable colours, very contemporary minimalism which, however, does not exclude a sense of conviviality. Among the projects currently underway, a consulting office at the Clinique Saint-Georges, also in Nice, Mala Beach at Cap d’Ail (now undergoing completion) and the Média Garden Hôtel at Sophia-Antipolis. Highly professional, Elisabeth also undertakes projects for private clients, using the same leitmotiv : enabling more modest budgets to attain their dream apartment while sticking as closely as possible to the dictates of fashion. Quite a challenge !

Tuscan fragrance TUSCAN FRAGRANCE
Introducing a new fragrance from Di Toscana : Pelle Nera. Pelle Nera (or Black Leather) is the oldest olfactory memory in Florence. And today, it’s in the Piazza Santa Croce neighbourhood that one comes across a sudden blend of leather and bark, a delightful tradition as vivacious as ever.

Purifying plants PURIFYING PLANTS
Using plants to fight pollution is possible. Thirty-eight of them have unsuspected powers. Fans of indoor plants will be really thrilled : numerous studies have shown their effectiveness in purifying and regenerating the air. This book lists all the species whose aptitudes in the field are especially remarkable. Turn over a new leaf from page one to the end ! Les Plantes Dépolluantes, Editions Rustica, 15 €.

They can be used to hide the dressing-room and provide a separation for the bedroom. Sliding façades are therefore indispensable ! Here, the appeal of alternating red and white, with decorative glass and semi-transparency. Manipulation is very easy thanks to rails fixed to the floor and ceiling. Worth knowing : this programme with tailormade dimensions proposes 18 references including six different colours (smoky, yellow, blue, red, green and grey).

CENTENARY CENTENARY
Eggersmann is celebrating its centenary by presenting “Unique by Eggersmann” models. Mirror-like stainless steel, Corian in different colours, polished slate, metallic lacquer and the 1980 Pop Art “Memfizz” model. Originals that have set this family firm on the highest rung in the world of kitchens. The address in Antibes is a superb showcase with models laid out as in a home, most of them without handles, very trendy today, and replaced by a groove with which to get a grip. The fashion is also for nooks for get-togethers, with low items of furniture for congeniality. The slogan “With Eggersmann everything is possible” sees that everyone obtains their dream kitchen : almost everything is made to order (dimensions, colours…), with a wide range of accessories.

cabin trunk CABIN TRUNK
“Seattle” is the name given to this storage unit. A cabin trunk with very sober looks which nevertheless goes straight to the heart of the matter, making the most of available space and offering the most possibilities in the smallest volume. The door opens totally to reveal a hanging closet, shelves, drawers, a tie-rack and a mirror. “Seattle” comes in mokka iroko, dark or stripped oak. The model shown here is modular.

Off the wall OFF THE WALL
Since its creation in 2004, Münchausen has become a benchmark for wall-paper, stickers and tiling. The patterns proposed in the two flagship collections, “Palm Springs” and “Toiles de Jouy”, continue to confuse the issue for the greater pleasure of unrepentant fans. Objects from flea-markets, micro-scenes with transgressive tones, decorum inspired by Hitchcock, all borrow a very graphic, 18th-century vocabulary, both encyclopædic and amusing. As per the wishes of the two designers, Philippe Rossetti and Simon Pillard, trompe-l’œil becomes a stage for anecdotes, with a tendency towards mythology. A bust of Heraclitus serving as the backcloth for a sculpture, motifs inspired by an engraving by Dürer, the Eiffel Tower rising above a pile of books are all pretexts for enrichment. Sometimes pedantic, the approach nevertheless rehabilitates secular forms in subtle and universal presentations.

Mystery object MYSTERY OBJECT
Behind this object, as beautiful as it is enigmatic, there in fact hides a nutcracker. Its exceptional design has sacrificed nothing to practicality ; quite the contrary, as it cracks even the hardest nuts with the greatest ease. Playful and useful, Menu’s “Nutcracker” is made of rubber and stainless steel, and bears the signature of designer Bruno Christesen.

Multi-talented MULTI-TALENTED
Olivier Grégoire is one of today’s most promising young French designers. Furniture, luxury items, technical products and even architecture, nothing escapes his creative urge. An innovative and accessible vision of design motivates this ultra-talented artist brimming with imagination, who here presents his latest concepts. The “Leonardo Dining Table” produced in partnership with Bertrand Clerc is inspired by a moment of intimacy in a couple, a surprising sculptural creation that invites us to share closer human relationships ; the “Tapisofa” is designed to take advantage of corners, an unused part of the home whose natural shape adapts to all kinds of positions imaginable… and the magnificent “Ömusic” box, a new, compact concept for hi-tech hi-fi… www.oliviergregoire.com.

And what’s happened to the old address ? It’s still there, devoted to Kartell, nothing but Kartell.

WALL DRAWINGS WALL DRAWINGS
We were already familiar with “Vynil”, the collection of stickers from Domestic ; now here comes its little sister, “Wall Drawings”. While the first obtained visual impact from lines and flat areas of colour, the second makes way for graduated tones, more elaborate textures, manual or photographic prints, and superimposed layers of colour.

A new ethic A NEW ETHIC
The Besson family has worked in home design and interior decoration for the past three generations. Self-taught Philippe “trusts his feeling” and sees himself as “close to the way people live”. He admits to sticking as closely as possible to the needs and desires of his clients, occasionally going as far as to combine different genres. After “the glorious years with the fortunes of Middle Eastern countries”, he now works in Switzerland, Paris, and between Cannes and Monaco. “I advocate a new kind of ethic, leaning towards a global and synchronised concept, between the architect with a state diploma and the interior decorator. Building a house based on these two principles means that one can address a project from a more rational point of view.”

Fashion victim FASHION VICTIM
Philippe Starck’s very famous armchair called “Mademoiselle” is now clad in Burberry. As inspired as ever, this genius of a designer decided to take an interest in the world of ready-to-wear for this new edition, producing a range that he has dedicated to the colours of Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Missoni Home, Moschino, Trussardi and Valentino. 472 €.

Adriano Garbarino ADRIANO GARBARINO
To say that Adriano Garbarino is an interior architect is correct… but terribly limited. Based in Monaco for the past 30 years, he has more than one string to his bow : this passionate fan of art history is also a great traveller, an enlightened collector and a well-known designer. He has designed many pieces of furniture, though he owes his reputation primarily to his carpets. In 1995, he exhibited his first collection at the “Maison & Objet” fair in Paris. Entirely handmade in pure New Zealand wool or wool and silk, his models are all hand-knotted (and produced in Népal) or hand-tufted (in India). For the inauguration of his new showroom, all glass and transparency, Adriano Garbarino presented a collection of jewellery including several unique pieces and antiques of Japanese origin. An address reflecting the image of the master of the house, unique and multi-facetted.

New on the scene NEW ON THE SCENE
This showroom opened very recently. In place and stead of Jean-Christophe Bruniaux, it’s now the Design Room which occupies the premises. The decor has been completely changed, with minimalism the rule of thumb for displays all in nuances and up-to-the-minute sobriety. Here, Flexform and Arketipo top the bill and present their latest collection. Design comes out all the better for it.

On-going expansion ON-GOING EXPANSION
From their earliest days in the profession, Géraldine Darlington and Pia Karlsson have kept their passion alive. These two interior architects manage their office-showroom, Intérieur Sud, with incredible energy but also lots of discretion. From successive extensions to a double address (they now occupy two different premises on the Place du Commandant-Lamy), they have expanded their team and taken on more clients. “We mostly work for private clients, both in France and abroad, very often on houses in “bastide” or intemporal contemporary styles.” Their challenge and their strength : “Producing what the client likes without falling into stereotypes, and adding our signature to the project”. There’s no lack of work sites at the moment, from apartments in a very prestigious complex in London to a restaurant in the Emirates (possibly to be followed by an hotel), not forgetting a very lovely country house in Grimaud. The bonus offered by Intérieur Sud is that its proposes, alongside top brands such as Flamant, Designer’s Guild, Elitis etc., a wealth of accessories and decorative items, as ideal gift ideas.

Now that it’s time to go back to work, revamping one’s office becomes a priority. Herman Miller has launched “Sense”, a new range of furniture offering intelligent design to meet three essential needs : rapid and simple installation, practical and modular spaces, personalisation and good looks for the work place. Furthermore, “Sense” gives priority to the use of recyclable and long lasting materials. To protect the environment, of course !

ALAIN LACOURT ALAIN LACOURT
“I’m a born interior architect. And I practise a profession which restructures notions of dreams and reality.” The tone is set. What Alain Lacourt doesn’t mention, it seems so self-evident, is that he has given priority to contemporary design for over 20 years. His huge showroom is a succession of spaces, offering the visitor varied stage-sets exclusively based on creative design. B&B Italia, Maxalto and Poliform are present in sofas and armchairs, kitchens bear the Varenna, Arc Linea and Schiffini labels. You’ll also find Ingo Maurer, among others, for lighting and, of course, the inevitable Starck. Top-notch and decidedly trendy garden furniture bears the B&B signature. Zen Design is also a design office with a team of professionals (some from the “Ecole Boulle” and Academy of Fine Arts). An expert in designing and revamping houses and apartments from A to Z, Alain often adds a touch of Zen. And he has added another string to his bow by creating furniture, such as his “Route de la Plage” table and a carpet produced by Tai Ping. “I love everything that’s contemporary,” he says, looking around at the works of art, sculptures, paintings and objects, that have taken their place in his work space.

The pretty women of Cannes and elsewhere all find their way to Pretty… for a starring role in the Festival City. Minimalist design, with a counter in studded white leather, echoed by the base of a long rack, also in white leather. On the wall, an imposing mirror of sanded glass, and in a corner a “Ballerine” chair designed by Dominique Roitel. That penetrating gaze ? Audrey Hepburn, who offers her glamorous image to a screen. For fashion and accessories, the Italian brands Mauro Menichetti and Monica Magni. Superior signs the silk shirts, falsely modest, and Mic Mac proposes very ’seventies bags. Year round living YEAR ROUND LIVING
Outdoor living is very popular. Normal, at this time of year ? Yes, of course, but henceforth, people no longer hesitate to import certain items back to the verandah and even indoors. In Nice, the new showroom called All Seasons devotes its 150 m2 to garden furniture and accessories. Fermob gets the lion’s share, with very trendy ensembles in lacquered aluminium (with batyline trim) or lacquered steel. You’ll also find a resin shower designed by Hedone, other compositions, also in resin, from ProLoisirs Océo, and tapas bars with high stools from Jardin au Bout du Monde. For the time being, the store is entirely dedicated to outdoor furniture, though it may well extend its range in winter to include indoor furnishings. To be continued…

A matter for professionals A MATTER FOR PROFESSIONALS
As work involving masonry and outdoor refurbishment very logically finds an echo in stone, Riviera Stone opened a showroom at the beginning of this year, which will delight all dedicated fans of minerals. Here, stone is displayed in all its splendour and diversity : travertin, limestone, porphyry… “The current trend is for pebbles and travertin,” says Samuel Leroux, “as much for bathrooms as for terraces and pool surrounds”. José Levy is already well-known for fashion design : Cacharel, Ricci Monsieur, Holland & Holland. And especially for his own line of men’s ready-to-wear with an elegant cut and revampled masculine colours : soft or acidulous blue, plum, burgundy. Today, this eclectic designer has stepped inside the world of interior decor for private day-dreaming. Deshoulières, a great specialist for porcelain since 1826, has asked him to design five items. “Dans ma Chambre” is a collection which plays with classics while taking a fresh look at the codes of the decorative arts in 19th-century France. Playful, original, ethereal, perfect.

It will also serve as a bedhead reading lamp, as its powerfulness easily allows you to read a book in real comfort. Born into a dynasty of interior architects, Sébastien Pisani perpetuates a tradition launched in 1950. VARIATIONS U VARIATIONS U
The furniture line that first hit the spot was inspired by a simple, upside-down “U”. Isabelle Millet, with a DPLG diploma in Architecture and a DESS in urban planning, has always focused on the use of space : interaction, osmosis, transparency, plays of light, blends of materials and textures. Her designs are a subtle dialogue between pure lines and sophisticated textures, giving priority to large formats for extra strength. She has fun with practical aspects.
A module becomes a bench, commode or sofa-end, a coffee table splits in two thanks to a set of wheels, a drawer slides beneath a bench… “When you take on an architectural project, you re-invent contours every day. The first line stands out for its creative, unfussy language, a simple shape, composed and consistant, straight and up-to-date. That’s the secret for giving relief to matter, volume and tonalities.” For Isabelle Millet, everything becomes a pretext for variations… on the same theme.
Deco duo DECO DUO
“Architecture and interior design are not limited to the creation of beautiful spaces.” So say Cédric Boulle and Franck Lombardi. They work together, each one the boss of his own firm. For Cédric, “Au-delà des Idées”, and for Franck, “Compagnon d’Art”. Their personal, complementary approach enables them to propose a comprehensive service, from plans to completion with turn-key delivery. Their references include the presidential suite at the Chèvre d’Or hotel in Eze, restoration and fitting out of a listed farmhouse in Coursegoules and, on the drawing-board, guest-houses of charm at Saint-Paul-de-Vence and a Californian-style home in Vence. “We will soon be opening a creation studio and showroom, also in Vence.” A future bearing the banner of development.

What’s the secret of Kartell’s success ? A winning blend of creativity, technology, glamour, practicality, quality and innovation. All factors which have propelled the brand to the starry firmament of design. Among its 2008 novelties, “Lizz”, a chair signed Piero Lissoni and Carlo Tamborini. Dreams and desires DREAMS AND DESIRES
“Everything begins with an encounter. That leads to a dialogue, discovering a place, dreams and desires… Always in search of the perfect project ; all that counts is passion and the joy of dreams come true.” Alain Morisse, who took over from his father in Saint-Tropez in 1986, thus sums up his past and present. The Morisses boast a list of references worthy of a directory, including top names in business and showbiz (Régine, Johnny, Karajan, the Royal Family of Bahrein, the Pinaults…). Private homes, hotels, top-quality residences, Alain has signed many achievements : the Hôtel Century in Geneva, Le Juana at Juan-les-Pins, a mall in Beverly Hills. At Les Issambres, he has just delivered the “Villa Métis” with mirror-style pool and balneo area, whose lighthouse, the construction’s key element, opens out to infinity.
Functional Design FUNCTIONAL DESIGN
There was once a designer-artist, Anglo-Egyptian, living in New York but travelling all over the globe, crowned with recognition and various international awards, a Jack-of-all-trades of genius and inspiration. He found himself face-to-face with a champagne. With its glowing colour and shimmering reflections, Veuve Clicquot Rosé inspired Karim Rashid to come up with Veuve Clicquot Globalight, a revolutionary and ultra-contemporary champagne bucket. This pure example of design in polished aluminium maintains champagne at its ideal temperature for about two hours. Ultra-sophisticated, it is a dense concentrate of technology, giving off light without heating up. Developed by Zumtobel, a world expert in lighting, its unique and complex know-how uses invisible mirrors and LEDs.

Of air and light OF AIR AND LIGHT
Nice Opened in July 2007, the studio-gallery of Gwendoline Bonnet and Philippa Martin proves that, even if glass-blowing is an ancestral art, it can also produce contemporary pieces. “We have very different but complementary approaches, and we thought, why not work together ?”, explain the two glass-blowers. Which thus led to a fusion of styles between a French and British artist, between minimalism and extravagance, rigour and almost total freedom. Each unique work is the result of creative research in which air and light become one. “When I blow glass, the light comes to inhabit it. Glass bears witness to the fact that air and light are a single constant reality,” explains Gwendoline. “Linking colours are woven into this living matter,” adds Philippa, “which take shape in a kind of ballet. When the glass sets, it’s a kind of “freeze” of life itself”. Their “Design” range thus blends practicality with contemporary free forms, and invites itself to the tables of the South.

“Miraggio”, “Linéal Gallery”, “Extend Trio” and “Extend Trio Collection” are all signed Marty. “Miraggio” is based on the combination of two symmetric strips giving the illusion of wide-strip parquet. As for “Linéal Gallery”, it offers metallic reflections, gold, copper and silver in turn, for fans of designer decor. Finally, “Extend Trio” and “Extend Trio Collection” follow the same path, that of diversity. The first combines three widths of parquet strips, creating a sense of movement : the second is a model aged in the factory, ideal for those wanting an authentic refuge.

Contemporary CONTEMPORARY
Thierry Aptel studied both Fine Arts and Applied Arts, learnt how to handle volumes, associations of materials and colours, all the strict rules of interior decoration. Once all this had been assimilated, he set to work, notably in the châteaux of the Vallée de Chevreuse. Then one day, Thierry Aptel decided to follow his heart. Two years ago, he moved to Nice and refocused his activity, re-looking interiors with a highly contemporary approach. “Redecorating or restructuring a home means playing at being a psychologist for its occupants. You have to take their needs and desires into account… as well as their budget.” Thierry manages to do this as efficiently as he carries out the project and takes care of the finishing touches. In fact, he proposes a global concept !

“FoxFloor”, a new patented system from Parqueterie Berrichonne, is currently revolutionizing the way floating and fixed parquet floors are laid. Last but not least, the ecological “FoxFloor” does away with solvants.

The Belgian brand Manutti has made itself a name in the very closed circle of top-notch products. Nowadays, as the terrace, patio and garden, as well as the area bordering the pool, are looked upon as additional living space, their fixtures and fittings call for closer attention to esthetics and practicality. These areas for getting together or simply relaxing are being clad in new materials to resist time and weather, are pleasing to the eye and, of course, comfortable. Colour codes evolve from one year to the next. Today’s trend is for natural shades, black and anthracite grey. “Aspen”, the modular sofa concept proposed in the 2008 collection, allows you to adapt your seating layout as required. Minimalism is the rule of thumb, sophistication welcome, elegance omnipresent. And a “chaise longue” can always complete the ensemble. With “Atlanta”, priority goes to organic and wavy forms. NiceMichel Poupion is a trained cabinetmaker who studied at the Boulle academy and has done his tour of France, like any self-respecting craftsman. In 1999, he settled down in Nice, in a discreet studio where he works with his team. “I met certain designers quite by chance,” he says modestly. Including Jacqueline Morabito and Matali Crasset. “We then proved that we knew what we were doing.” Luck ? Yes, but talent too. Les Ateliers de la Reinière put their signature to the Hi Hotel in Nice, the terrace of Spoon, Alain Ducasse’s restaurant in Gstaad, and the Trotinette boutique in Monaco. 80 % of its clientele belongs to the international sector : stars of showbiz, sport and finance, whose names Michel Poupion discreetly refuses to give. A designer in his spare time, he has just come up with a round table that can become square… and vice versa. Now all he needs is a manufacturer.

Nice Launched by Marie Robinson three years ago, this workshop now hangs out its sign. Originally, it had no intention of becoming a boutique, but its door gave onto the street, so passers-by were always dropping in to get a closer look at design in action. “So I opted for a workshop-boutique,” says Marie who, thanks to her success, no longer works alone. With her team, she still makes house linen (curtains, bedspreads, bedhead covers, tablecloths and runners…) which she proposes in two collections, spring/ summer and autumn/winter. Egyptian cotton, linen and silk are still her preferred materials, and this spring subtle colours and pastel shades are the order of the day in a harmonious blend of contemporary and timeless. Because she’s constantly working on something new, Marie also displays a variety of items. She has unearthed a piece of workshop furniture made of zinc, porcelain and a range of earthenware saucepans. She also sells Rachel Espinasse tableware and Telise chairs (metal models designed by Xavier Pauchard, back in 1934). By getting bigger, her workshop has lost none of its charm. Quite the contrary !

On with the show… ON WITH THE SHOW…
Planika Décor invents and makes fireplaces. Christophe Pillet is a designer of furniture and other items, an architect and interior architect, scenographer, creator for Artelano, Moroso, Driade, Cappellini, among others. When Planika and Pillet got together, they came up with a new collection called “Planika Fires”. Hearths which can be installed wherever you like as they can follow you from one room to the next. Take, for instance, this low element with a built-in bio-ethanol hearth. According to Planika : “The possibility of admiring the flames of a real fire gives an impression of warmth, safety and cosiness”. So there’s no longer any need to choose an “appropriate” setting or envisage building work. The hearth of the 21st century has charm inversely proportional to its size. www.planikadecor.com
Beautiful and bio BEAUTIFUL AND BIO
Valdivia is a town in Chile, but also a brand of jewellery 100 % bio-ethical and unique, made of vegetal ivory. Also known as “tagua”, this ivory is the hardened albumen of the fruit of palm-trees which grow in certain valleys in South America. An alternative to animal ivory, it behaves in exactly the same way and offers the same possibilities. The brilliant colours are obtained by the use of vegetable pigments. Everything’s made in the Andes with traditional craftsmanship, before ending up around the necks of fashion victims who care about nature. www.valdivia.fr

High-tech scenarios HIGH-TECH SCENARIOS
They’re both from Lyon, and while their store, Scenari, saw the light of day in Cannes, it’s because the majority of their clients are here on the Côte d’Azur. Gérard Allochon and Yves Zorne haven’t launched just another showroom. Scenari is a showcase for their expertise as well as a design office and a meeting-place. “We’re constantly searching for products that are not distributed by our competitors, and our priority is to offer “outsize” quality.” In other words, these talented Jacks of all trades install kitchens, wine cellars and other items with that little extra that makes all the difference. The kitchen, for example, will have a sliding work-top that reveals a little cooking area. Then the wine cellar : made-to-measure, high-tech, it accommodates up to 450 bottles. And so on… The pair work with Valcucine, Toncelli, Gaggenau, EcoSmart (for fireplaces), Versace and Rosenthal for tableware. Epicurians at heart, they also organize wine tastings with associated products every six weeks. “Conviviality and complicity arise quite naturally from this type of get-together”. 35 avenue Maréchal-Juin (04 92 18 07 56).

Introducing “Architexture” INTRODUCING “ARCHITEXTURE”
A graduate of the “Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture de Paris” and the Pratt Institute in NYC, Cyril Durand Behar is a pioneer of “architexture” : “A very personal approach, inspired by my activities and peers, and based on an analysis of volumes and materials, variations in scales between indoor and outdoor architecture”. On this basis, he no longer decorates, but sculpts a place, like the new Décathlon store in Antibes, a clever mix of solids and voids, all in total transparency. For this huge ship superbly anchored in its environment (a constant for Behar), he came up with a visible frame, easy circulation and a large opening to the outside. His agency with its international stance also handles the creation of furnishings, thus completing the concept’s indoor/outdoor approach.
